Today was the first time I saw the 2022 Ford Lightning pickup truck up close. She sure is a beauty.
First look at 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Electric Pickup Truck. This was parked at the Catalina Hills mall in Tucson Arizona. The local dealer puts cars here from time to time to advertise.
The Truck of the Future Is Here: All-Electric Ford F-150 Lightning. The F-150 Lightning is the first electric pickup in the F-Series line. It comes with a battery pack that will give you enough range to go almost anywhere you need to go. You’ll get a targeted 563 hp and 775 lb.- ft. of torque. That’s the most torque of any Ford F-150 ever. And it gives you a thrilling ride. You’ll feel like you’re driving a muscle car when you hit the throttle. Plus, you’ll get the latest in connectivity and convenience. You can even charge at home using solar panels.
With its innovative design, the F-150 Lightning is built tough. Its advanced technology comes standard, making it easier to operate and maintain. A completely redesigned chassis uses the strongest steel ever in an F-150, and helps deliver superior handling and better fuel economy. An all-new independent rear suspension delivers improved comfort and handling, while an all-electric powertrain and a new engine combine to provide exceptional efficiency. The F-150 Lightning also includes a host of Connected Technology features, including a full suite of safety and security systems, plus a host of innovative connectivity options.
Ford plans to produce the truck at its plant in Michigan. The F-150 will be the first mass-produced electric vehicle produced in North America and the first U.S.-built pickup truck to offer Level 3 automated driving capabilities.
“Ford is leading the way in electrification,” said Mark Fields, president, Ford Motor Company. “We’re committed to providing our customers with fuel economy and emissions benefits, while also offering them an exciting range of vehicles.” That commitment includes launching the first all-electric pickup truck, F-150 Lightning, later this year. Ford will launch an all-electric version of the iconic Mustang sports car next year, followed by other electrified models including Escape and Edge SUVs, C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid crossover and Lincoln Aviator luxury sedan.
Lightning is a new kind of truck that offers owners a new driving experience, unlocking new capabilities as well, such as the ability to run an entire house on electricity and a massive lockable trunk with power and charging capabilities. Ford will deploy standard software updates called FordPower Up to improve technology experience, add new functionality and fix issues without trips back to the dealer.
Ford Electric Charging Network
All this plus more comes with proven Built Ford Tough F Series durability and capability and the biggest electric vehicle charging network in North America, making it easier than ever to charge up and go. Starting at just $39,974, the commercial-oriented entry model offers more cargo space than the previous generation, with standard 4WD and independent rear suspension; an upgraded interior with improved materials and ergonomics; and the latest infotainment system. Plus, it’ll forever improve with over-air updates. F-150 Lightning represents all we can do when we push forward for progress, says Ford president and CEO Jim Farley, who grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, the birthplace of the iconic F-150 pickup truck. It’s quick like a Raptor, with a power frunk, plenty of juice to run your home for three days or power your awesome tailgate. And it’ll forever improve with updates delivered over.
We’re not here to make an EV for the few, Ford is committed to building one for the many” says Kumar Galhotra, president, Ford North America.”F-150 Lightning delivers all we’ve said EVs could offer, plus the capability you expect from a Built Ford Tough pickup – not just near instant torque, but powerful towing and pulling customers can count on. Smart, connected – and better over time packed with intelligent features, F‑150 Lightning epitomizes what Ford brings together to deliver a truck that’s even smarter and more capable.'”
A second example is available Onboard scales, which uses the truck’s sensors to estimate payload and tells customers how much they’re hauling. Since payload can impact range, on board scales is integrated with intelligent range to help ensure F-series trucks give an accurate estimate of how many miles they’ll get. F-series trucks also debut available pro trailer hitch assist, which automatically controls steering wheel, throttle and brake inputs. To make hitching trailers easier, F-series trucks come equipped with available phone as a key. When active, this allows customers to unlock, lock and start their truck without removing their phone from their pocket.
Ford Power-Up is an app that allows you to connect your phone while driving. You can listen to music, watch videos, play games, read news, check social media, and more. All of these apps are available through the app store. There are currently three different ways to download the app: 1) Downloading the app directly from the app store 2) Using the mobile browser 3) Installing the app from the app store when you first start your vehicle.
With the ability to offload 11 kW of power, Ford Intelligent Back Up Power enables the truck to become the ultimate power source for the home. By keeping the lights on during outages, Ford Intelligent Back Up Powers helps keep the house secure.
You Can Charge Your House During Power Loss.
Whether sheltering during a storm, or trying to stay safe during a heat wave, customers should now be able to use their truck to give them power when they need it the most.
F-150 Lightning is built to seamlessly transition between charging your vehicle and providing you with power at home.
And Ford is the first company in the United States to offer this capability on a fully electric truck.
Ford believes that using electric vehicles will become an important part of our transportation infrastructure in the coming years. To prepare for this shift, Ford is partnering with SunRun to provide access to clean, affordable energy through its 80-amp Ford Charge Stations. These stations can be installed at any residence and allow drivers to plug their F-Series trucks into the station to recharge. Drivers can also choose to add solar panels to their home to generate their own clean, renewable energy. By combining both options, drivers can power their home and charge their truck all at once, saving money on expensive utility bills and reducing pollution caused by fossil fuels.
Power is not limited to the house. With enhanced Pro Power onboard, you can take advantage of the built-in electrical outlets on your truck to directly power a variety if tools, electronics and appliances. You can also charge your phone and other devices using the USB ports located throughout the cab and bed.
Smart features allow customers to manage their batteries better than ever before. Customers receive notifications when their trucks’ batteries fall below one-third of their total range, and they also have the option to turn off the engine and save fuel while waiting at a charging station. These capabilities are made possible by the truck’s powerful next-generation Lithium-Ion battery. F-150 Lighting offers two different battery options: a standard-battery and an extended-battery. Both offer 230 miles of EPA-rated range and 300 miles of EPA-rated extended range.
Under the hood is a versatile high-tech mega power trunk offering dedicated storage space that’s secure, lockably and easily accessible by a power open and close system. It targets 400 liters of capacity and 400 pounds of payload—enough to stow two carry on bags and one checked bag or two sets of golf club. Cleverly designed with bump height clearance, this water resistant space comes equipped with four electric outlets, two USB charging ports and a drainable floor. It can easily power your mobile work site or an Epic Tailgate. With 2.5 KW of power, there’s enough capability to charge all of your electronics, TVs, laptops, etc.
“We have taken an innovative approach to vehicle design that combines the best of our past and future technologies, including lightweight materials, aerodynamics and advanced electronics.” says Mark Fields, president, The Ford Motor Company. “This is a game changer for Ford and our industry. We’re committed to bringing the latest innovations to life at every level of the manufacturing process, and we’re excited about the possibilities this technology opens up for us.”
F-150 Lightning boasts excellent performance on rugged terrain, with a 4×2 system featuring four selectable driving modes: Normal, Sport+, Off Road+ and Tow/Haul+. Dual in-board motors provide smooth acceleration and torque, making it easy to navigate challenging conditions. The battery is protected by a robust enclosure and has been tested at extremely low temperatures to ensure it can perform when needed most, even during the coldest months.
F-150 Lightning features a state-of-art liquid cooling system that helps manage heat distribution across the truck. The system includes improved cooling systems and components that help ensure the truck can thrive in tough driving conditions. A dedicated 80-amp charge station is available as standard equipment, making it easy to charge an extended-range model at home. This system also offers the only dual onboard charging capability on an electric truck in its class. With this, F150 Lightning adds an average of 30 miles per hour of fast charging time, fully charging an extended range truck from 15% to 90% in just 8 hours.
F-150 Lightning is targeted for up to 54 miles of electric driving range in just ten minutes. When plugged into an Extended-Range F-150 Lightning, you’ll get up to 30 miles of additional range per hour of charging. And if you’re looking for even more range, you can add up to 50 miles of range per hour via optional high-capacity battery packs.
Distinctively designed, high-tech trucks are coming soon. The F-150 Lightning will be the first of its kind. Its sleek lines and modern styling will surely catch attention. Available signature LED light bars will light up the front and back of the truck. Three new grille designs will add a bold new look to the F-150. These changes will also help reduce drag, making the F-150 Lightning even more aerodynamic. The F-150 will also offer available enhanced 360-degree lighting, which can illuminate specific zones or the entire area around your truck.
F-150 Lightning is an all-electric pickup truck that makes no compromises on space. It maintains the same cab and bed sizes as its gas counterpart, making it capable of fitting thousands of accessories already available in the market. It offers a fold-out interior work surface that makes working inside the vehicle easy and more productive. Available max recline seats offer almost 180 degrees of recline, helping customers recharge as needed. And the brand new Rouge electric vehicle center will also be a zero waste-to-landfill facility. Ford is investing $1 billion into the historic Rouge plant, adding 500 new jobs, and using advanced sustainable manufacturing technologies to build the truck as a part of its commitment to become carbon neutral by 2050.
